Hungarian Puli Dog Breed
Our dog insurance customers may be interested to learn about a relatively unusual breed of dog called a Puli. This is a Hungarian herd dog that is known for being mischievous. The Puli is a dog that looks and acts like a mop on springs. They are fun to watch walk because they actually bounce along at an energetic pace. When they were used as herd dogs they would bounce along and land on the backs of the sheep when they were working the herd.
This breed of dog has to have a knowledgeable and experienced owner. They usually will not be the best fit for an average household. This is due to its very protective behaviour and strong herding instincts. The Puli is a very strong athletic dog with super quick reflexes. They can clear a six foot fence from a standstill and change direction very quickly.
They require a lot more daily exercise than the average house dog and also need plenty of mental stimulation. They are very loyal to their family and will bond closely with their owner. They are very sensitive dogs and can sense your feelings and moods. They have a very dominant instinct to herd livestock. They do a lot of barking, chasing, and pushing which makes them not particularly suitable for a family with small children.
Their unusual hair takes a huge amount of care and time. They have a double coat. The outer layer is wiry and wavy and the undercoat is dense and wooly. The two coats of the Puli fuse together and form cords. Every few weeks the cords have to be separated and eventually their coats brush the ground and give them the appearance of a mop head. They require frequent baths and their hair has to be dried. The drying process takes the longest time.
They are one of the smartest breeds around. On the other hand, they are also the most manipulative and demanding breed of dogs. They need constant and consistent training and discipline. This breed is very hardy and has a lifespan of 14 to 16 years.
The Puli breed is not for everyone, but they do make wonderful and protective pets for those able to cope with their demands and needs. They will give the right family hours of entertainment and years of loyalty.
