What does this mean? Some people will say that they would rather put money aside each month instead of buying pet insurance just in case they don't have to claim. What those people forget is that pet insurance covers more than vets' fees. It also gives you public liability cover and that can be vital in our "compensation culture". Let's say you leave your garden gate off its latch and your dog chases a cat across a road and causes an accident. You would be liable for the cost of that accident - the damage to the cars and the personal injury to the drivers. Those costs could amount to hundreds of thousands. Or if your dog causes someone to fall in a park and injure themselves you may be facing the worry and cost of a "no win no fee" legal claim too. Horse owners have an even worse time as accidents involving horses often cause far greater damage. To make matters worse, in 1996 the House of Lords made a ruling that extended the circumstances in which a pet owner may be liable to third parties for the acts of his pet. So it is vital for a pet owner to consider public liability insurance. It is possible you may have this as part of your house insurance but do check as not all insurances will cover accidents away from your property. Pet Insurance always offers public liability cover - at least for Dog insurance and Horse insurance. Curiously, because of a legal quirk, cats escape the law - as do their owners, which is why you rarely find public liability cover in Cat insurance. There’s more to pet insurance than the bottom line premium so do look at the small print or quiz your insurer before you buy! Plan Finder: Insurance Plans For Dogs Of All Ages |
