A dog may be known as man's best friend, according to the old adage, but it seems female owners are in fact closer to their canine companions than their male counterparts.

Research commissioned by Tesco Pet Insurance revealed that just 20 per cent of men repaid the faithful devotion of their animals by citing them as their best friends.

By contrast, more than a third of female pet owners polled during the study considered their pet's company to be preferable to that of other people, while 76 per cent admitted to talking to their animals as though they were humans.

Rachel Cutler, head of Tesco Pet Insurance, said: "Owning a pet can be a very rewarding experience - many people consider their cat or dog to be part of the family and even, as our research shows, their best friend."

Despite being thought of as an important part of the family, an increasing number of pets are being abandoned during the credit crunch as Brits struggle to cope with the costs of keeping them.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals revealed a 57 per cent increase in animal abandonments in 2008 compared to the previous year.
