Some ethical insurance shoppers may shun pain medication for animals, but one vet has said it can be useful and that new advances in the industry have diminished the possibility of harm.

Dr Marty Becker wrote in the Sacramento Bee that treating pain promotes healthy healing.

"Untreated pain slows healing time, interferes with sleep and depresses the immune system," he wrote, adding: "[It] improves respiration, shortens post-surgical hospitalisation, improves mobility and can decrease the spread of cancer after surgery."

He went on to note that many were concerned about side effects, but the arrival of drugs misoprostol and sulcrafate have offered a safeguard against related ulcers ad stomach lining damage.

Dogs that are unable to tolerate non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) have also benefitted from Tramadol, and Dr Becker recommended owners ask their vets about this medication.

Human NSAIDS, on the other hand, should always be avoid as they are almost always toxic to pets and can cause liver and kidney malfunction.

Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
