Some breeds of dog 'more vulnerable than others to smoke' E-mail
Although some ethical insurance shoppers may already be aware of the threats of second-hand smoke to their pet's health, they might not know that some breeds of dog are more vulnerable than others.

Dr John Reif, professor at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, said there were a number of medical problems that could arise in animals who live with smokers.

Speaking in a podcast on the American Veterinary Medical Association, he noted that although all canines and felines could get same illnesses that afflict human smokers, such as cancer, heart disease and others, certain breeds of dog were more at risk.

He reported as a general rule those pooches with short noses like pugs and pit bulls were in twice as much danger of getting lung cancer.

Longer-nosed breeds like collies and German Shepherds, were two-and-a-half times more likely to get nasal cancer.

Certain canines are also more prone to lymphoma, a disease that can be triggered in part by second-hand smoke.

These dogs are Cocker Spaniels, Boxers and Retrievers, according to the Morris Animal Foundation.
