Pet health cover customers may agree with findings of a study indicating forcing seniors to give up their pets when they move into sheltered accommodation can have negative effects on their quality of life. A report commissioned by the Society for Companion Animal Studies and the Pet Food Manufacturers' Association discovered less than a third (29 per cent) of UK facilities allow dogs and cats as a matter of policy. It was also revealed during interviews with hundreds of members of staff and residents that some 40 per cent of people in care have demonstrated noticeable distress at being separated from their pet. Over the course of these enquiries, the study determined that often the lack of fixed policy on continued animal ownership was down to shortcomings in communication within the individual facility. Some 65 per cent of the sheltered accommodation facilities examined did not have set criteria for accepting creatures. In response to publication of the study, the Pets Advisory Committee has put together a package of advice intended to orientate housing providers on the issue of pet ownership among residents.
