Owners may think they take care of their dog or cat by having a pet health insurance, but one vet has claimed many people are not as compliant in their companion's wellbeing as they think. Dr Tracy Acosta, veterinarian at Biloxi Animal Hospital in Mississippi, spoke out in the Sun Herald against people who are not meticulous enough when it comes to giving an animal its medication. Home therapy is an integral part of care, she explained - and if proper doses are not respected a creature could get worse. "When your pet requires either oral or topical medication, it is important to follow the label directions exactly," she asserted. Dr Acosta added that "responsible pet owners" would call their vet if in any doubt at all about administering drugs. Among common shortcomings is stopping treatments when the pet appears to have improved or doubling up doses if the animal's progress is frustratingly slow. This latter mistake could lead to an overdose in the animal - which could be fatal in some cases. She said both these practices are harmful.
