Grooming has been called an integral part of proper pet healthcare by an expert - not just a treat.

Canadian newspaper EMC Orleans published an editorial which suggested more owners take this aspect of creature nurturing more seriously.
"Grooming is not just for aesthetic purposes. Regularly cleaning and brushing a pet's coat ensures the skin remains healthy and receives adequate air and blood circulation."

The writer went on to describe how matting could cause fungal infections or sores due to irritation.

Long-haired dogs require more hair care than others and cats only need their claws to be clipped short and have infrequent baths as they wash themselves, the correspondent noted.

Though many may go to a professional for sophisticated treatments such as flea dips, other may wish to follow the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal's (ASPCA) lead and try to do it at home.

After picking up tips from the groomer, people may enjoy taking on this responsibility.

However, the ASPCA recommends keeping sessions short, at five to ten minutes, so as not to make the pooch start dreading them.
