Dog health insurance policyholders should not expect their pets to never show anger, an expert has said.

A USA Today editorial has raised the question of whether or not perpetually cheerful animals are normal.

The question was raised followed a speech by the director of the Association for Behavioural Medicine and Health Psychology at the University of South Florida Charles Spielberger.

He said: "Anger is a normal, natural, emotional experience that is characteristic not only of people but of animals."

The debate was opened to owners everywhere and was also informed by the words of Patricia McConnell, the author of For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend.

In it, she posited canines must be taught to handle frustration in the same way children do.

According to animal behaviour expert Cesar Millan, outbursts can sometimes stem from a problem in the human-pet dynamic.

For example, if the pooch is tearing up the house when left alone, the owner should make a practice of ignoring it for the five minutes before leaving the house and after entering so as to teach it that separation is not a big deal.
