A campaigner who has been working for a year to raise awareness of certain diseases affecting specific breeds of dog has recounted her surprise at the major interest expressed for the causes - from owners and non-owners alike. Carol Fowler first made waves when she made an appearance on the BBC's Pedigree Dogs Exposed in 2008 to talk about how her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Bonnie had died from Syringomyelia. She told K9 Magazine how the following day she received 200 e-mails of support - a demonstration that continued for the next month. "What really surprised me was that even non-dog owners contacted me. Ordinary, decent people were shocked and outraged by the scale of suffering in our pedigree dog population," Ms Fowler revealed. Since then she has dedicated about 30 hours a week to the Cavalier Campaign - and is also taking care of her other pooch, which is also suffering from Syringomyelia. This disease is characterised by pain caused by damage to the dorsal horn of the spinal cord and commonly affects King Charles spaniels.
