| Consumers urged to consider cost of pet care |
|
People who are thinking of buying a pet have been urged to think about how they will pay for veterinary treatment.Woodside Animal Sanctuary in Elfordleigh said it has been inundated with cats and dogs in recent weeks. Helen Lecointe, manager of the facility, believes this is because consumer finances have been stretched by the economic downturn and fears of a recession. Therefore, she has called on people who are considering purchasing a pet to make sure they can afford it first. Speaking to the Herald, she commented: "More pets seem to be being thrown out because people can't afford vet bills, but we can barely afford to pick up the tab ourselves." Ms Lecointe added that if things are this bad at this time of year, there could be a possible crisis around the festive period. This comes after John Cole of PDSA told Pethealthcare that many animal owners could be unable to afford vital medical treatment for their pets as a result of the credit crunch.
