Families or individuals looking into buying a dog have been urged to consider becoming foster owners over the festive season instead.

With a number of RSPCA branches set to close for at least a couple of days over the Christmas period, the charity has called on animal lovers to help provide care for the dogs and cats they usually look after.

In particular, the RSPCA Central and North East London branch is on the lookout for dozens of homes for a range of pets, including hamsters and guinea pigs, over the festive period - and is offering to cover all associated costs.

"We are looking for people to take care of these animals over Christmas and we are hoping that they will see it as a lovely way of spending time with an animal over the holiday," branch spokesperson Christine Kerridge said.

The RSPCA is set to suspend its re-homing efforts over the next few weeks as it works to minimise the number of people buying a dog or taking on an unwanted pet and giving them away as Christmas presents.

This latest plea for foster owners comes as a man in Macclesfield has been banned by magistrates from keeping dogs for ten years after he was found guilty of allowing his pet Dalmatian to become morbidly obese on a diet of chocolate and crisps.

Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
