Pet health care: Take them to the vet for a dental check-up |

 Dental check-ups are an important part of pet health care and can prevent serious diseases.
This is the advice given recently by Dr Val Poll, a veterinarian in Coldwater Animal Hospital, Ogden, Utah.
He spoke to the Standard Examiner about this area of dog and cat care, and said owners should be aware how dangerous unclean teeth can be.
If they are not white enough, then a dental cleaning session should be scheduled, he suggested.
"If their breath stinks, get them in as soon as you can … they [can] get infections in the mouth and risk losing their teeth."
Dr Poll added that infections can sometimes spread into a pet's bloodstream and cause sepsis - a serious condition.
Anyone with a concern about pet health care may want to use their ethical insurance policy and access a professional who can advise accordingly.

Pet insurance "makes sense" |

 One vet has discussed pet insurance and said it makes sense for owners to take out a suitable policy.
Pete Wedderburn is the Telegraph's resident expert on all things animal-related. He said because there is no equivalent of the NHS for pets, people can be hit financially if their cat, dog or other furry friend becomes ill unexpectedly.
However, with pet insurance, such an effect could be avoided.

Pet dog 'saves life of game show host' |

 Adriana Xenides is a game show host in Australia and has told of how her pet dog saved her life.
Digital Spy reports that the Argentina-born TV personality spoke to Woman's Day magazine about how she has suffered five heart attacks in two years.
However, her whippet, named Red, came to the rescue when Xenides recently collapsed at home due to the pain she regularly experiences following an operation to remove her large intestine.
"She'd grabbed the dish cloth, dunked it in her water bowl, then come and put it in my mouth so I wouldn't be dehydrated. It's just amazing. I'm only here because of her," she explained, adding that the canine was still keeping an eye on her when she woke up.
Xenides is known for her long-running role on Wheel of Fortune, in which she starred for 18 years. Before her operation, she was plagued by gastro-intestinal digestive disorder and said the symptoms ranged from bloating to significant fluid retention.

Owner "devastated" after pet dogs are stolen |
|
 A Plumstead resident is "devastated" following the theft of her two pet dogs.
According to This is Local London, Linda Dingley, 60, of High Grove, was walking her pugs when two men grabbed the leads and drove off in a Volkswagen Polo.
Ms Dingley said the ordeal was like "losing a member of the family".
And police in the area have issued an appeal for anyone who has purchased a pug in recent days to contact them.
"The dog might have been sold cheaply. Pug dogs are generally worth around £900," said Detective Sergeant Keith Simmonett from Greenwich robbery squad.
Ms Dingley was left lying on the floor crying when the men stole the animals, which are aged two and six.
It happened on February 17th at 11:45 GMT.
However, a somewhat happier ending was experienced recently in Middlesex, when a family was reunited with its missing cocker spaniel.
Millie, who is eight months old, was found in Chichester.

Mamma Mia star snapped dog walking |
|
 Dog walking is one activity the star of Mamma Mia is not too busy for, according to some recent paparazzi snaps.
Amanda Seyfried, who played the role of Sophie in the 2008 smash hit film, was spotted walking her Aussie shepherd, Finn.
A few weeks ago, she said in an interview with Unscripted that the canine was "the love of my life".
Seyfried, 24, is currently dating British actor Dominic Cooper, but looks to have made ample time in her life for a four-legged friend too.
"He is going to be big - he is going to be a 50-pounder and I won't be able to pick him up, but that's fine," Showbiz Spy reported her as saying.
Finn has brown and beige fur with patches of white and, in the photos posted on gossip website TMZ, Seyfried is seen wearing sensible dog walking attire - a tracksuit and trainers - while taking him out for a stroll.
