Top pet dog owners to be recognised |
|
The nation's top young owners of pet dogs are to be highlighted at this year's DFS Crufts show.
Presented by the Young Kennel Club, there will be three winners of the Shaun McAlpine Outstanding Young Person Award in three age categories - six to 11, 12 to 16 and 17 to 24.
The prizes are scheduled for distribution on March 14th and, according to the Kennel Club, aim to recognise youngsters who have excelled via their work with canines.
This could be in the form of fundraising, helping to organise dog activities or showing great success in dog training or showing.
Named after a 22-year-old dog handler who died in a road accident 25 years ago, the award "serves to highlight the fantastic way young people and dogs interact to perform such wonderful feats in society", said communication director Caroline Kisko.
"We cannot praise all of our young achievers enough."
DFS Crufts begins on March 11th.

RSPCA: Cancer cat case was hard to deal with |
|
A woman has been fined for failing to provide her sick cat with the pet health care it needed to combat skin cancer.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the north Queensland resident, 45-year-old Celestine Lambert from Sarina, south of Mackay, was ordered to pay A$3,000 (£1,751) after pleading guilty.
When the feline was seized by the RSPCA, it was so ill it had to be put to sleep.
Mackay magistrate Damian Dwyer said Ms Lambert's decision not to obtain treatment for the cat was a conscious one.
And inspector Selina Neil explained it was a very distressing case to deal with.
"To know that a condition is that advanced - that basically we've got bits and pieces falling off the cat - is very hard," she added.
In recent weeks, RSPCA Australia reached out to the public for help to shut down puppy farms.
The charity also called on responsible dog breeders and governments to give their support.

RSPCA seize injured dogs used in fighting ring |
|
Pet health care is to be administered to dogs seized by the RSPCA in a series of dawn raids.
Two pit bull terrier-type canines and a Staffordshire bull terrier were rescued by the charity from an address in Small Heath, West Midlands, earlier this week.
All of them showed injuries suggestive of dog fighting, while dog fighting paraphernalia was also discovered at the location. This included a treadmill, veterinary kits and several cockerels.
Over 20 officers were used in West Midlands Police's operation, which ended in three arrests and the additional seizure of six quails and another pit bull terrier-type dog from an Anglesey Street property.
Chief Inspector Ian Briggs of the RSPCA said although many people believe dog fighting no longer takes place, there are still people who enjoy this "vile entertainment".
"There are still people out there who delight in training dogs only to watch them rip each other to pieces," he explained. "While these people continue to pursue their sick hobby, the RSPCA will continue to pursue them."
According to the RSPCA, someone calls the charity's cruelty hotline for help every 25 seconds.

Cat survives sub-zero temperatures to be reunited with owner |
|
Davey is a cat from Sankey Bridges who recently went missing and survived some of the coldest temperatures Britain has experienced in decades.
According to the Warrington Guardian, the feline was in need of a little pet health care when he was found after 20 days.
Aged 21, he was found more than four miles away - and his owner said she was braced for the worst when the Four Paws veterinary centre phoned her to say Davey had turned up, but might not last for long.
"His paws were a mess, he had lost weight and looked smaller than a kitten," explained Roree Windus of Roughley Avenue.
She added: "He wasn't eating so I had to feed him with a syringe - but now he's back to normal."
Meanwhile, a Derry animal shelter has issued a warning after numerous cats in the Creggan area disappeared.
The Rainbow Rehoming Centre fears the animals may have been trapped and then used with lurcher dogs as bait for bloodsports.

Owner sought for wounded cat |
|
Pet health care for a wounded cat was recently required after it was found with a deep cut in his leg.
According to the Scottish SPCA, the male adult grey animal was discovered at Old Deer near Mintlaw in Aberdeenshire earlier this week.
He had caught his front right leg in his collar, which had then rubbed against his skin, causing what the organisation called a "very nasty injury". It is believed that he strayed and then could not get home because he was in pain.
However, he has been treated by a vet and is taking a course of antibiotics.
"He is a nice wee cat, in good condition and his collar was red with studs and a bell. We're sure his owner is missing him," said SPCA inspector Scott Elphinstone.
Another mystery recently encountered by the charity was the case of a newborn puppy found on a pavement in the Orchard area of Tullibody, near Alloa, last week.
She was only a few hours old and was probably dumped by her mother by accident, experts said.
