Shelter dog reunited with owners |
|
A pet dog has been reunited with its original owners. The pet, named Haley, was put up for dog adoption three years ago, reports blog ohmidog. After a family crisis, its owners had taken Hayley to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, but their daughter, in particular, continued missing and talking about their one-time pet. Recently, the family felt it was time to replace the dog-shaped hole in their lives and went to the shelter to get a new pet. They couldn't believe it when they came face to face with Hayley again. The shelter told the Washington-based family that Hayley had been adopted in the meantime but just kept running away and was eventually returned to the shelter just a few days before. Recently a five-year-old Jack Russell, named Twiggy, returned home after going missing for six days. Twiggy ran away after being attacked by another dog during a walk on Shirley Hills, Croydon.

Chipped cat finds her way home |
|
A cat in San Francisco has found its way home after being lost for years, thanks to an identity microchip. Owners interested in providing the best pet health care or looking for that extra bit of pet cover in case their furry friend goes missing may wish to have their animals chipped - and thanks to such a device, Dicey found her way home. The cat went missing after the Krooss family adopted a dog that Dicey just did not seem to agree with. Susan Kerr Krooss admits that while they tried their best to locate Dicey - and still thought about her regularly - they had given up hope. Ms Krooss told the San Francisco Chronicle: "The days of her disappearance turned into weeks, months, then years. Sometime, I'm not sure when, I gave up hope that Dicey was alive."
But, years later, a woman named Tina turned up on their doorstep to announce that she had found the cat. After taking Dicey to the vet, the microchip led her to the Krooss family home.
Recently the Peninsula Daily News reported the case of a cat that had been missing for five months being reunited with its owner thanks to a similar chip.

Cat survives being trapped in frozen food warehouse |
|
A cat has survived despite being trapped in a freezing food warehouse for at least a month, reports thisisleicestershire.co.uk. The cat is currently receiving pet health care from Leicester's RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre after his four-week adventure in the warehouse, which operates at minus 28F. Frosty, as the cat has been appropriately named, had already lost one ear but vets have had to amputate his other ear and his tail since the rescue. Staff had been unable to catch the cat despite a number of sightings, but now he is in the safe hands of the RSPCA he will eventually be put up for pet adoption. Rachel Allcock, an RSPCA care assistant, said: "When he came into us he was pretty shy, which isn't surprising considering the ordeal he'd been through. He's a lovely cat and he's become very playful." A cat from Sankey Bridges had a similar escape after 20 days missing as temperatures plummeted earlier this winter. Dog walkers urged to heed safety warnings |
|
Dog walkers have been urged to heed a safety warning, by the Highland Council. Those tempted to take their pet dogs to the Newtonhill Community Woodland in Caithness are being encouraged to abandon any plans to visit the site, which was closed in March 2008. The former landfill site, where evidence of contaminants like asbestos has been found, was declared off-limits as a precautionary measure two years ago.
However, a section of a fence near the site's entrance has been continually broken since the closure.
Dieter Tuerlinckx, the Highland Council's east Caithness countryside ranger, said that while he realised the site's closure was a blow to the community, people still needed to respect the decision. Mr Tuerlinckx said: "Despite many clear notices put up by the council some people are still entering the woodland to walk their dogs on a daily basis." But people may still be advised to exercise their pets - albeit safely - as fog walking can be a way of calming overly energetic canines, according to PeoplePets.com's resident expert.

Anatomy Gifts Registry 'allows people to care for animals in life and death' |
|
The Anatomy Gifts Registry (AGR) has been recognised for its benefits to pet health care. The gift register allows people who are pet health care givers in life to continue to help animals after their death, by donating their bodies for medical research. The AGR has been recognised by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which has awarded the registry a PETA Proggy Award for outstanding effort in ethical science. People who sign-up to the AGR will help provide expertly-prepared human tissue for medical research, which will help dramatically reduce medical testing on animals. Kathy Guillermo, PETA's vice-president of laboratory investigations, says: "Using human tissues to train physicians and research human ailments is the best way to advance human medicine and save the lives of countless animals at the same time." The AGR was established by the Anatomic Gift Foundation, which was founded in 1994 to place donated human tissue for medical research.
