Owning a pet 'helps children develop' E-mail
Owning a pet dog, cat or even a hamster or fish helps children to develop key skills for life.

They can teach children valuable lessons that will carry them through the rest of their lives. Owning a pet teaches children how to be responsible for another creature which needs feeding, cleaning and exercise, a recent article in the Himalayan Times highlighted.

In the US, a study of 394 university students showed those who grew up with a pet cat or dog had more confidence than those who did not, reports the Ontario Veterinary Medicine Association (OVMA).

The OVMA also found a second study in America revealed that children aged 11 to 16 years old with pets at home had an increased understanding of non-verbal communication than their peers without pets. Similarly, those with pets appeared to be less stressed during examination periods.

Pets can also teach children how to cope with death. For many, the death of a pet will be one of their first experiences of this and it prepares them for future deaths within the family.

Man 'loses licence' for dog walking while driving E-mail
A 23-year-old dog owner who tried to walk his pet dog while driving ended up losing his licence.

Paul Railton, from Annfield Plain, Stanley, was driving on a country lane at five mph holding on to the lead of his pet lurcher while it walked alongside his Nissan Navara on December 4th 2009, reports the Press Association.

Police were alerted to the incident by a concerned cyclist.

Railton pleaded guilty of breaching the Road Traffic Act on two counts at Consett Magistrates' Court. He was fined £124 and given three penalty points.

He had already accumulated nine points for other driving offences in the past three years so he was disqualified from driving for six months under the so-called totting-up system.

Speaking after the hearing Railton said: "It is a joke. I'm not bothered. I knew I would get three points. I might save myself some money not having a car."

Lily Allen's pet dog "beaten up" E-mail
Lily Allen's pet dog Mabel is recovering at home after receiving pet health care at Allen's local vets following an attack by two larger dogs.

The 24-year-old singer posted a picture on her Twitter account of her rescue dog at home with pink bandages on her legs. The message accompanying the picture read: "Mabel got beaten up by bigger dogs. She went to doggy hospital, but she's ok."

Allen, who appeared at last week's NME Awards, is currently preparing for performances at the O2 Arena in London and the Manchester Evening News Arena with Dizzee Rascal later this week.

Despite reports in the Daily Mail that she plans to take a break from music to run a vintage clothing label, Lucy In Disguise, with her half sister, Sarah Owen, Allen has just been confirmed at the O2 Wireless festival in July.

This is the first time that Allen has used her presence on the internet to advertise her pets' mishaps. In 2007 she blogged about how she was "overjoyed" to be reunited with her dog Maggie May who was stolen in East London.

Pet Travel Scheme celebrates 10th birthday E-mail
It has been ten years since owners could not travel with their pet dogs, cats or other furry friends without putting them in quarantine.

The Pet Travel Scheme celebrates its tenth anniversary today (March 2nd) and the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said some 660,000 journeys have been made by animals to and from the UK during this decade.

In addition, not one case of rabies has been linked with the scheme since its inception, proving its effectiveness with helping to manage disease.

Animal welfare minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "The Pet Travel Scheme was set up to enable British animal owners to enjoy travelling with their pets when they need to."

The first pet passport was used by a pug called Frodo Baggins - named after the Lord of the Rings character.

Defra statistics show about six in ten pets using the scheme belong to owners in the UK, with another 20 per cent from Europe.
