Anatomy Gifts Registry 'allows people to care for animals in life and death' |
The Anatomy Gifts Registry (AGR) has been recognised for its benefits to pet health care. The gift register allows people who are pet health care givers in life to continue to help animals after their death, by donating their bodies for medical research. The AGR has been recognised by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which has awarded the registry a PETA Proggy Award for outstanding effort in ethical science. People who sign-up to the AGR will help provide expertly-prepared human tissue for medical research, which will help dramatically reduce medical testing on animals. Kathy Guillermo, PETA's vice-president of laboratory investigations, says: "Using human tissues to train physicians and research human ailments is the best way to advance human medicine and save the lives of countless animals at the same time." The AGR was established by the Anatomic Gift Foundation, which was founded in 1994 to place donated human tissue for medical research.

Pet microchipping clinic to be held |
A society is holding a microchipping clinic to prevent pet dogs and cats from getting lost. The clinic, held by the Ottawa Humane Society, is designed to give owners that extra bit of pet insurance by boosting the chances of finding their animal if it goes missing. Pets that are taken to be microchipped will have a grain-sized microchip implanted under their skin, with the device holding identification information that cannot be lost or become unreadable like a traditional tag or collar might. The society advises animal lovers "to take precautions by ensuring that if their dog or cat becomes lost, it has the best possible chance of a safe return." While there is a charge for each appointment, the proceeds gathered will be used to benefit animals at the society. Previously, a vet talking to the Oxford Mail about a dog that was found four months after it had gone missing, said that without the pet's microchip there would simply have been no way of knowing where it came from. Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.

Keep pets wrapped up from the cold |
Pet dogs and cats can suffer in the cold if not properly looked after, say an animal society. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) organisation have given pet health care givers tips for ensuring their animals stay warm in cold temperatures. PETA advise owners to keep animals inside, if freezing conditions are on the way, and not to allow dogs or other animals to roam free as they may get injured while hunting for warmth. PETA said: "Although they are equipped with fur coats, dogs and other animals can still suffer from frostbite and exposure and they can become dehydrated when water sources freeze." The body has also asked animal lovers to keep an eye out for animals that are less fortunate, like strays. PETA suggests that strays should be taken in until their carer can be found and that people should also remember to put food out for birds who may struggle to find food in freezing temperatures. Animal Friends Insurance recently reminded owners that a healthy diet was just as important as exercise in caring for a pet.

Tips for buying the right pet dog equipment |
Buying the right pet dog equipment is crucial if you are buying a puppy, according to advice from Your Dog magazine. The publication identifies dens, toys, beds and feeding equipment, as the four main areas to focus on ahead of taking in a new arrival. Dens offering complete enclosure, or pens with an open top or bottom are now vital in offering safety and security to your puppy, according to most experts.
When choosing toys owners must ensure they are of the right size for the puppy and that there is a mixture of those they can play with alone and with you. Additionally your puppy's bed must be of the correct size to accommodate your pet's rapid growth, while easy to clean bowls and a constant supply of water are a must. The magazine indicates: "You'll also require a soft collar and lead plus an identity tag, as well as food and water bowls. Choose a soft brush and a mild shampoo so you can gradually introduce him to grooming and baths." Your Dog magazine recently offered helpful hints on taking your dog abroad using the PETS scheme. Man charged with killing cats |
A man employed as a pet health care giver has been arrested after allegedly killing two cats. The man, who was employed at a cat and dog rescue centre in Monmouth, New Jersey, has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty. Daniel Mann, 31, was arrested after two employees said they saw him kill two cats on Monday, March 1st. The two employees claim Mr Mann, of Belmar, strangled one cat and threw another headfirst into the ground. Mr Mann is being held at Monmouth County jail. The accused had been an employee at the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for around 18 months. In the US, the charges carry a possible sentence of three to five years in prison. The UK's Animal Welfare Act can see anyone who is cruel to an animal, or does not provide for its welfare needs, being banned from owning animals, fined up to £20,000 and potentially sent to prison.
Animal Friends Insurance Services are an ethical pet insurance company. We have been supporting animal welfare charities around the world since 1999 by donating all net profits to their causes.
