Runaway pig adopted |
|
A runaway pig who confounded local communities for months has found a forever home with one animal lover, in news which may interest those who are considering pet insurance.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that Gordy the swine - who had been running wild in villages and towns - was captured by an animal shelter where he was fed and watered.
It was expected that he would stay there for a while but, as she tells the newspaper, pet health care enthusiast Melissa Belcher knew the swine would be coming home with her as soon as she saw his story advertised on television.
Ms Belcher already has four pet dogs, four cats, two goats and another pig.
She said that Gordy - who will live with his new porcine pal Miss Piglet in her back garden - would be well looked after, although she intends to curb his hobby of munching on doughnuts.
"He might get one every few weeks as a treat, but not very often," Ms Belcher added.
One famous pig owner is George Clooney, whose pot-bellied pig Max died a few years ago.

Swan with broken leg rescued from river |
|
A swan has been rescued by pet health care officials after being discovered on a river bank with a broken leg.
According to Midhurst and Petworth Today, the bird was stranded on the side of the water body.
Firefighters wearing safety equipment and dry suits and welfare officials made their way over to the swan and managed to coax it on to a rescue sled - a device designed specially for water-based missions, although it is also used in particularly muddy circumstances.
The swan is now in the care of the RSPCA.
It was recently reported by the organisation that it freed a swan trapped behind a water gate.
The swan's companion - as they are birds known to mate for life - was patiently waiting for her mate on the other side of the railings.
It was thought that they had been stuck there for several days waiting for rescue.

Cat "shattered" by air rifle |
|
Those considering pet adoption may be shocked to hear of one recent animal welfare case involving a cat.
The BBC reports that Marmie was found with "appalling" injuries by the RSPCA in Cornwall and was so badly injured inspectors originally assumed he had been hit by a car.
When they picked him up to examine him, however, it was discovered that the moggy had been shot at close range with an air rifle.
The blast shattered two of his legs and split open his stomach.
However, the orange male is now healing and pet health care experts say they hope the "lovely" cat will make a full recovery.
His family - who had reported him missing - have been notified of his injuries and took him back him with them.
The Scottish SPCA has recently? released a report citing 2009 as one of the most "horrific" years for animal cruelty for a long time.

'Switch to natural cleaners' for your cat's sake |
|
A newspaper has offered some tips to keep your cats healthy - and your house clean.
The Cincinnati Examiner piece, penned by Ingrid King, notes that many chemicals used in cleaning can harm your furry friend "since they groom themselves by licking and as a result ingest anything that comes in contact with their feet or fur".
To get around this, Ms King suggests switching to more natural cleaning products such as white vinegar and baking soda.
The latter could even been used in cat litter to deodorise and freshen the area.
Meanwhile, vinegar can be mixed with some warm water to create a harmless non-toxic - yet effective - surface and hardwood floor cleaner.
It can also be used to wash coffee machines and dishwashers.
However, Ms King emphasises that cat owners should avoid products containing essential oils as certain forms of these can be harmful to felines, particularly tea tree oil.
As one of the biggest independent cat insurance providers in the UK, Animal Friends Insurance products are available to buy online or the phone ( 0844 70 50 300 ). We offer a wide range of affordable cat insurance options to suit all budgets from accident only policies to full lifetime cover.

Trapped swan's mate waits for him |
|
Love can give you wings - although one disgruntled swan who was separated from his mate for what is thought to have been a few days may disagree, in news which may interest anyone considering UK pet insurance.
Pet health care organisation the RSPCA rescued the white bird when he was discovered trapped behind a water gate in north Wales.
On the other side of the gate, floating "patiently" was his female companion.
It is not known how long the swan was trapped, although it could have been a couple of days - and inspector Chris Dunbar, who attended the scene, noted that the bird could "never" have got free of his own accord.
"His mate was waiting on the water the whole time we were there and when they were reunited it was a lovely sight," Mr Dunbar recalled.
He added that the swans were uninjured and were able to swim off together.
Swans are creatures that often mate for life - although some are more flighty, changing partners several times.
