Dog aiming for win at DFS Crufts E-mail
A pet dog is aiming to win big at this year's DFS Crufts show.

Champion Bitcon Gold Coast at Northey has already proved his pedigree winning the Kennel Club's Open variety hunt point retrieve stake back in December 2009.

Remarkably, the win was achieved after just 18 months of gundog training for the animal.

Champion Bitcon Gold Coast at Northey is a Hungarian Vizsla and has achieved such early success alongside handler Andrew McDonald.

The dog's quest for honours began when Mr McDonald attended a training day at the Kennel Club back in April 2008.

Caroline Kisko, the organisation's communications director, paid tribute to Mr McDonald, his wife and, of course, the canine for the speed of their success.

Ms Kisko said: "For this dog to achieve a win at the Kennel Club's Open AV Stake after just 18 months is a considerable achievement and the Kennel Club congratulates Mr and Mrs McDonald."

DFS Crufts FM will be broadcasting on a different frequency, 87.7FM, this year. The station aims to bring listeners the latest news from the show up until the close of play on Sunday March 14th.

Cats get nine lives saved at Utah shelter E-mail
A cat and dog rescue home in Utah has implemented a new policy which has resulted in many of their felines getting more than nine lives.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Salt Lake county animal shelter managed to save an "unprecedented" 1,600 kitties last year - which is around double the number of those rescued the year before.

This has been done by varying the prices of adoption - cats older than kittens are now free to take home while some dogs are almost triple the price that they were.

However, canines are nearly always easier to rehome than adult felines - so the balance has tipped in their favour.

It is hoped that more cats moving out of the shelter will reduce the need for others to be euthanised if they do not find homes as there will be more room.

The Scottish SPCA has released a report stating that there were far more "shocking" attacks on animals in 2009 than in recent years.

Dangerous pet dogs focus 'should be on owners' E-mail
The RSPCA is calling for owners of pet dogs to be punishable for the irresponsible behaviour of their pets rather than tarnishing individual breeds for the behaviour of one or two animals.

Government proposals to update current legislation, including the Dangerous Dogs Act, come as a result of reports of gang use of dogs to intimidate communities and individuals.

Among the plans is one giving police and councils more power to tackle the rise in so-called status dogs in communities via the introduction of Dog Control Notices.

The RSPCA has long campaigned for changes to be made to British law making irresponsible owners liable for their dog's anti-social behaviour and pushing the need for better owner and dog training. The charity believes legislation needs to be updated to deal with the root cause of problems rather than the reactive nature of current laws.

Claire Robinson, RSPCA government relations manager said: "It needs to be remembered that dog welfare is not just about dangerous dogs."

RSPCA calls for support for circus ban E-mail
Pet health care and welfare charity, the RSPCA, is calling for the public to support a ban on travelling circuses in England from using wild animals. Many concerns have been raised about the health care and general wellbeing of circus animals.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has launched an online questionnaire which closes next Monday (March 15th), following the RSPCA's Big Stop campaign, to glean public opinion.

The RSPCA wants the use of wild circus animals to be banned within six months of legislation being passed and for them to be re-homed in zoos and sanctuaries.

Thousands of people have already contacted their MPs in support of the proposed ban. As the window for completing the questionnaire draws to a close, the RSPCA is making a final push to encourage the public to speak up for animals' health care.

According to the charity, circus animals are often kept in close confinement away from their natural environment and made to perform abnormal tasks purely for entertainment.

New pet health care television campaign launched E-mail
The Scottish SPCA has launched a new television campaign to drum up support for its pet health care services.

The charity is seeking additional funding after its figures for 2009 demonstrated how difficult it had been to maintain a network of services for animals without pet insurance.

Mike Flynn, the Scottish SPCA chief superintendent, praised the work of all staff involved in the charity from ambulance drivers, to inspectors, to rescue centre workers.

He highlighted the charity's lack of governmental or lottery funding and implored the public to help the Scottish SPCA continue to provide its network of services.

"Our figures for 2009 demonstrate just how difficult a job we have rescuing and rehoming animals all over Scotland, with the number of animals in our care, calls to our animal helpline and cases going to court all increasing significantly," said Mr Flynn.

The Scottish SPCA previously revealed that inspectors and ambulance drivers attended 4,000 more incidents in 2009 than in 2008.
