Abandoned puppy dies E-mail
A puppy recently found on a street in Clackmannanshire only hours old has died, ethical insurance customers might be sad to hear.

The black female, named Tilly, was discovered in her birth sack last week lying on a pavement in Tullibody and the Scottish SCPA rescued her, administering pet health care and food at the Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno.

At the time, the charity said it was most likely that the pup was inadvertently left on the street by a mother who was out walking when she gave birth.

It later discovered this to be the case and the owner said she had taken the mum home where she gave birth to nine more babies.

Although Tilly only stood a slim chance of survival, the Scottish SPCA said it wanted to try.

"She had missed out on vital nutrients from her mother's milk in the first few hours of her life," said inspector Leanne McPake.

"However, it is always worth trying as we have had some success in the past with hand rearing puppies from birth."

Despite the loss of Tilly, the organisation said it was pleased to hear her mother and the rest of the litter are being well cared for.

Yesterday, it announced the discovery of a cat at Old Deer near Mintlaw that had been found injured. The owner is being sought.

"Deliberate" act leaves pet dog scarred for life E-mail
A pet dog has been attacked and left scarred for life.

According to the RSPCA, three-year-old Bonnie was deliberately set upon by thugs after she escaped from his owner's garden in Prestatyn.

The incident, which is believed to have involved a highly corrosive liquid being thrown at the Labrador, took place on February 12th. She returned home with a huge open wound on her back.

Describing it as "mindless cruelty", the charity's inspector Fred Armstrong said the incident had left him "lost for words".

"Someone locally must know or have witnessed something and I urge them to contact me," he added.

Bonnie is now recovering at home.

The RSPCA often takes action against people accused of abusing animals and says its priority is to ban offenders from living or working with pets again.

In 2008, it investigated 140,575 complaints of cruelty and secured 2,574 convictions, but it also uses advice and education to help continuously improve animal welfare.

Missing pet dog found after 2 months E-mail
A pet dog who went missing before Christmas has been found hundreds of miles from his home.

Deacon, an 18-month-old German shepherd, was brought to an animal shelter in Deland, Florida after he was spotted running in traffic with another stray dog.

Fortunately for Deacon, his owners - who live more than 600 miles away in Stuart, Virginia - had him microchipped before he went missing.

The microchip allowed the pet dog to be reunited with a delighted Keith and Pamela Holt.

Travelling to Deland from Stuart by car took the Holts over ten hours and through five states to be reunited with Deacon.

In a letter to the West Volusia Beacon, Ms Holt said the family had given up hope on finding their pet dog alive.

"We are extremely grateful for the people who helped us retrieve our dog in order for us to bring him home safely," she added.

'World's oldest dog' stays young thanks to weekly trips E-mail
The owner of a pet dog claimed to be the oldest in the world stays mentally active with weekly trips to the pub.

Lulu is 21 human years old and, despite being deaf, almost blind and with a limp, loves the attention she gets from regulars at the Coach and Horses in Longford, Coventry.

According to the Sun, owner Travis Buckley - who has taken care of Lulu since she was six weeks old - says the outings help her to stay on her toes.

"People who know her scoop her up and bring her there - she's a lovely dog, she's our little baby," he added.

Good pet health care is likely to help dogs stay as fit as a fiddle, explained Dogs Trust veterinary director Chris Laurence, while animals tend to be better cared for these days and benefit from innovative medical care.

Guinness World Records is now investigating to see whether Lulu can take the title of oldest dog, after the previous holder, Otto, died last month.

Top pet dog owners to be recognised E-mail
The nation's top young owners of pet dogs are to be highlighted at this year's DFS Crufts show.

Presented by the Young Kennel Club, there will be three winners of the Shaun McAlpine Outstanding Young Person Award in three age categories - six to 11, 12 to 16 and 17 to 24.

The prizes are scheduled for distribution on March 14th and, according to the Kennel Club, aim to recognise youngsters who have excelled via their work with canines.

This could be in the form of fundraising, helping to organise dog activities or showing great success in dog training or showing.

Named after a 22-year-old dog handler who died in a road accident 25 years ago, the award "serves to highlight the fantastic way young people and dogs interact to perform such wonderful feats in society", said communication director Caroline Kisko.

"We cannot praise all of our young achievers enough."

DFS Crufts begins on March 11th.
