Police dogs killed in hot car |
|
Two police dogs have been killed after being left inside their handler's vehicle as temperatures outside soared to nearly 30 degrees C.
Ethical insurance customers will no doubt be saddened by the tragic case, in which the two German Shepherds were left in the car just yards away from Nottinghamshire police station.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is investigating the incident, as television pictures on Thursday showed officers laying flowers outside the headquarters and saluting the canine duo.
Nottinghamshire assistant chief constable Peter Davies said: ''This is a tragic incident and we value the important work our police dogs carry out on a daily basis."
The case comes as both the Kennel Club and the RSPCA warned owners against the perils of leaving their canine companions in hot cars during the summer months.
According to the Kennel Club, owners should only hit the road with their dogs in especially hot weather if the journey is "absolutely necessary", while the animal should have plenty of space, shade and lots of water to drink.

Boxer saves duo from house blaze |
|
A clever canine has been credited with saving the lives of his owners after alerting them to a house blaze - just in the time for them to escape the burning building.
Ciaran McGuigan said his Boxer dog raised the alarm after a fire broke out at his home in Donegal, Ireland early on Wednesday morning.
The relieved owner said he and his friend had been sleeping as the flames ripped through the property - and were only awoken by the determination of their canine companion, allowing them to flee the building with only seconds to spare.
Mr McGuigan said: "What woke me was the dog barking and by that time the whole place was on fire."
"I managed to get out and then I went back in for Billy and he came out ok."
The incident comes after three pet dogs in Plymouth had a narrow escape when they were caught up in a house fire while their owner was away.
Two of the animals had been shut in the fume-filled kitchen to prevent them from running away and firefighters had to work for 20 minutes to resuscitate the plucky pooches, the Plymouth Herald reported.

Owners urged to keep dogs out of ponds and lakes |
|
For many owners, giving their dogs a dip in the nearest pond may seem a kind idea in the summer heat, but one animal lover is warning people to think again.
Annie Fabbri came close to losing her beloved Border Collie Cassie after the five-year-old pet pooch ingested toxic blue-green algae - called Cyanobacteria - while cooling off in a small lake, the Daily Mail reports.
The deadly algae thrive in hot weather and can kill dogs within just five hours of ingestion, and it was only thanks to the quick thinking of local vet Charles Williams that Cassie was saved from death.
He recognised the animal's symptoms, which included heavy salivation and pale gums, and started treating her immediately, but Ms Fabbri is keen to alert other owners to the threat.
She said: "I certainly wouldn't want anyone else to go through what we have been through - so even if your dog is desperate to cool off in this hot weather, make sure it is in a river or the sea."
The incident comes after the Environment Agency warned dog owners to keep their pets away from several lakes and rivers across Redbridge, London after finding traces of the blue-green algae.

Kennel Club seeks UK's most dog-friendly venues |
|
Pet insurance customers are being urged to put forward their nominations for the UK's most dog-friendly restaurants and shopping venues.
The Kennel Club is running a new competition to honour those establishments that go out of their way to cater for our canine companions by offering innovative services or even just a bowl of clean water.
Dog lovers can recommend their favourite hotels, offices, caravan parks and diners that they think deserve to be recognised in the Open for Dogs Awards 2009.
Last year's winners included Cafe Cree in Dumfries and Galloway, which offers doggy diners their very own food and drink, and Kennel Club spokesperson Caroline Kisko hopes for similar success this time around.
"There are hundreds of places that are now willing to welcome dogs and dog owners with open arms and this competition has been launched to recognise these," she said.
The request comes after the Kennel Club this week advised that owners should only travel with their dogs to places that accept them in order to avoid having to leave them in hot cars during the summer months.

Owners urged to keep their canines cool |
|
Dog lovers heading out to enjoy the sun with their canine companions this summer have been warned to beware of the effect the hot weather could have on their animals.
According to the Kennel Club, the soaring temperatures experienced in Britain this week served only to intensify the problems dogs have when travelling in warm conditions.
With the Met Office having issued a heatwave warning across many parts of the country, the organisation is keen to remind owners to guard against the threat of heatstroke - and even death.
Caroline Kisko, communications director at the Kennel Club, said: "I would urge owners to only travel if they can ensure that their dog can be kept cool and if their destination is dog-friendly so they are not left in a vehicle."
If this is not possible, she recommended that owners leave their furry friends at home with plenty of water and shade.
The caution comes after two police dogs in Nottinghamshire were killed earlier this week after being left inside a car by their handler as temperatures outside soared to nearly 30 degrees C.
