Police dogs killed in hot car E-mail
Two police dogs have been killed after being left inside their handler's vehicle as temperatures outside soared to nearly 30 degrees C.

Ethical insurance customers will no doubt be saddened by the tragic case, in which the two German Shepherds were left in the car just yards away from Nottinghamshire police station.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is investigating the incident, as television pictures on Thursday showed officers laying flowers outside the headquarters and saluting the canine duo.

Nottinghamshire assistant chief constable Peter Davies said: ''This is a tragic incident and we value the important work our police dogs carry out on a daily basis."

The case comes as both the Kennel Club and the RSPCA warned owners against the perils of leaving their canine companions in hot cars during the summer months.

According to the Kennel Club, owners should only hit the road with their dogs in especially hot weather if the journey is "absolutely necessary", while the animal should have plenty of space, shade and lots of water to drink.
