 Vet and columnist Pete Wedderburn has spoken out to raise awareness of how beneficial having a pet dog or cat can be to the elderly.To illustrate his point, he recounted in the Irish Independent the story of one of his clients, an old woman who lived alone in County Dublin. He recalled how strong her bond was with Pal - her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named - and how she would talk to her pet as he carried out pet healthcare checks on him. Dr Wedderburn asserted that Pal's presence in the nursing home that Delia O'Connor eventually had to move into was a great help to her and comforted the woman greatly in her last days. He said these benefits should be accepted by the institutions that care for the elderly. "The time has come for those responsible for helping older people to see the piece of the patchwork of care that can no longer be ignored," he added. His cause is supported by many, including the Society for Companion Animal Studies, which recently carried out extensive research in a bid to determine why not all assisted living facilities have accepted furry friends.
