Dog training news: Labrador 'can detect owner's disorder' E-mail
Those interested in dog training skills might be amazed to hear about Coco, a Labrador who can reportedly stop his owner falling into a coma.

According to a recent article in the Mirror, Karen Ruddlesden, who suffers from Addison's disease, can experience a fever, convulsions and sudden leg pain - even a coma - if levels of a certain steroid in her body drop too low.

But Coco, who now carries a steroid injection kit in his harness, can apparently detect when this happens by smelling her breath and licking her hands to warn her.

If Ms Ruddlesden is asleep, Coco will touch her with his paws.

"He has given me my life back," she said. "But since having Coco I'm not scared of going out. I've got more confidence and we've even been abroad on holiday."

Dog training is thought by some health groups to be one way of providing certain types of care for people with various conditions.

The NHS describes Addison's disease as a rare condition that only affects about four people in every 100,000 in the UK.

Animal Friends Pet Insurance, one of the largest independent pet insurers in the UK offer dog insurance, cat insurance and horse insurance to UK residents.
