Writer mourns death of older dog E-mail
One writer has described her grief at having lost her beloved pooch to pet healthcare complications - and those owners of older dogs may be able to relate to her feelings.

Daily Mail writer Anna Pasternak revealed how, since her dachshund Wilfred died at the age of 20, last week, she has not been able to stop crying.

She recounted how when the pooch developed a cancerous tumour, they elected to have him put down so that he would not suffer.

"We lay by him and thanked him through our avalanche of tears for giving us so much joy, such endless happiness."

Ms Pasternak went on to say: "He was my best friend and companion."

The writer also described how throughout Wilfred's life, they had come to form a relationship with their vet, who had accompanied the oldest dog in his practice through the highs and the lows and was there for the end.

Owners who are suffering from similar feelings of loss may want to make use of the pet bereavement support services offered in the UK by the Blue Cross and the Society for Companion Animal Studies.
