Dog lovers heading out to enjoy the sun with their canine companions this summer have been warned to beware of the effect the hot weather could have on their animals.

According to the Kennel Club, the soaring temperatures experienced in Britain this week served only to intensify the problems dogs have when travelling in warm conditions.

With the Met Office having issued a heatwave warning across many parts of the country, the organisation is keen to remind owners to guard against the threat of heatstroke - and even death.

Caroline Kisko, communications director at the Kennel Club, said: "I would urge owners to only travel if they can ensure that their dog can be kept cool and if their destination is dog-friendly so they are not left in a vehicle."

If this is not possible, she recommended that owners leave their furry friends at home with plenty of water and shade.

The caution comes after two police dogs in Nottinghamshire were killed earlier this week after being left inside a car by their handler as temperatures outside soared to nearly 30 degrees C.
