Owners urged to keep dogs out of ponds and lakes E-mail
For many owners, giving their dogs a dip in the nearest pond may seem a kind idea in the summer heat, but one animal lover is warning people to think again.

Annie Fabbri came close to losing her beloved Border Collie Cassie after the five-year-old pet pooch ingested toxic blue-green algae - called Cyanobacteria - while cooling off in a small lake, the Daily Mail reports.

The deadly algae thrive in hot weather and can kill dogs within just five hours of ingestion, and it was only thanks to the quick thinking of local vet Charles Williams that Cassie was saved from death.

He recognised the animal's symptoms, which included heavy salivation and pale gums, and started treating her immediately, but Ms Fabbri is keen to alert other owners to the threat.

She said: "I certainly wouldn't want anyone else to go through what we have been through - so even if your dog is desperate to cool off in this hot weather, make sure it is in a river or the sea."

The incident comes after the Environment Agency warned dog owners to keep their pets away from several lakes and rivers across Redbridge, London after finding traces of the blue-green algae.
