Family welcomes pet dog home after 3 months E-mail
A family in the United States is celebrating after their pet dog returned home after three months lost in the wilderness.

The family, who are from Ohio, lost Mindy while holidaying in New England over the summer and, while they had alerted animal welfare officials, they had all but given up on seeing her again, the broadcaster ABC has reported.

But the dog eventually turned up after three months, with officials in Massachusetts believing that she must have survived on a diet of grass, roots and bugs.

However, despite her remarkable foraging skills, Mindy weighed just three pounds when she was reunited with her owners, who had been informed that she had returned from the wilderness through a site especially set up for lost pets.

The RSPCA, along with many other animal welfare organisations, recommends that owners take the time to get their pet dogs micro-chipped.

According to the charity, the technology is the most effective means of reuniting lost dogs with their owners, with more than 450,000 animals having been chipped in the past five years alone.
