Dog owners have been encouraged to boost their health by taking their pet for a walk on a regular basis.According to the Dogs Trust, people who own a dog can enjoy a number of health benefits. For example, having a pet was said to help reduce stress and anxiety, which in turn helps to cut a person's blood pressure. The organisation also claimed that people who walk their dogs tend to be healthier than those who do not own a pet. These factors were said to have benefits for a person's mental health as well, as the likelihood of depression could be reduced. Clarissa Baldwin, chief executive of Dogs Trust, commented: "[We have] always promoted the benefits of owning a dog, but it is clear to see that there is strong academic support to show that there are health benefits as well." The organisation added that dogs could potentially assist in the development of children with conditions such as autism and various learning difficulties. This comes after the government released a code of practice for pet owners outlining their responsibilities and legal requirements.
