'Cannabis cat tormentor' sentenced E-mail
A young man has been sentenced for charges of animal cruelty against a cat.

Those present in court saw a video filmed on a mobile phone in which South Tyneside resident Mark Kane, 19, put a tabby into a bag, filled it with cannabis smoke and swung it around his head.

Mr Kane is said to have stolen it from his girlfriend's friend.

The cat has run away and disappeared, magistrates heard.

Chairman of the bench Ken Buck believes the moggy suffered "real stress and unnecessary suffering".

He added: "We do think the charges of animal cruelty are appalling in nature."

RSCPA inspector Clair Hunt was reported as saying she was pleased with the penalties of £100 fine, a three-month sentence to be suspended for two years and the prohibition to keep a pet for ten years.

"It deters people from doing the same thing," she explained.

Also to be judged this week was Chloe O'Connor, 19, from Hyde, who was found guilty of the same charge for shooting a cat through the abdomen with a crossbow and killing it.

She was given 12 weeks in a young offender's institute.
