Cats get nine lives saved at Utah shelter E-mail
A cat and dog rescue home in Utah has implemented a new policy which has resulted in many of their felines getting more than nine lives.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Salt Lake county animal shelter managed to save an "unprecedented" 1,600 kitties last year - which is around double the number of those rescued the year before.

This has been done by varying the prices of adoption - cats older than kittens are now free to take home while some dogs are almost triple the price that they were.

However, canines are nearly always easier to rehome than adult felines - so the balance has tipped in their favour.

It is hoped that more cats moving out of the shelter will reduce the need for others to be euthanised if they do not find homes as there will be more room.

The Scottish SPCA has released a report stating that there were far more "shocking" attacks on animals in 2009 than in recent years.

"Cat lady" loses three felines in fire, two survive E-mail
A self-professed "cat lady" has spoken out about her gratitude to fire services for rescuing two of her beloved kitties when a fire burned her home down.

Stephanie Brown told the Daily Gleaner that one of her moggies received oxygen from a firefighter but is still "as cuddly as ever" and noted that she wanted to particularly thank her hero for his bravery.

"The other cat is completely fine," she added.

However, her three other felines perished in the blaze.

Pet health website Heavenly Muffins advises drawing up an evacuation plan in the case of a fire - and ensuring your cats and pet dogs are included in such a process.

A pet disaster kit - containing emergency food supplies, as well as important information such as pet insurance and veterinary details - could also be a good idea.

And informing firefighters of the approximate location of your pets as soon as you can is paramount to giving your furry friends their best chance of surviving a blaze.

Cat reunited with owner after a year E-mail
A beloved cat missing for over a year has been delivered back into the arms of his grateful owner.

Sparky was identified through his microchip which coincidentally had been implemented days before he disappeared from his household, the Boston Channel reports.

His owners tried for months to find their pet but had to give up when they found no sign of him.

"It was difficult to accept and it crushed my daughter's heart, but we hoped Sparky was safe and comfortable in someone's home," one told the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA).

But, although he was missing part of his tail, Sparky was returned happy and healthy.

The MSPCA told the news outlet that only three per cent of felines in shelters are ever returned to their owners.

A cat and dog rescue home in Utah recently reported that they have been able to rescue more kitties since they put the price tag up on dog adoptions, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Cat wins slimming contest E-mail
One fat cat and her owner are celebrating after the feline managed to lose over 20 per cent of her body weight.

Toots was named the Chester champion of Kilo Crunch Challenge run by Vets4Pets at Brook Lane, Hoole, the Chester Chronicle reported.

She was crowned the weight loss queen after shedding 1.4 kg of her overall weight, slimming her down to 4.7 kg.

Her proud owner Lindsay Burdekin told the local paper that she had rescued Toots from a life on the streets and her weight loss had been noticeable because of her small size.

She added that Toots' diet had been improved from a tip from one pet health care professional which involved carefully measuring the amount of food the kitty was receiving.

Now Toots "definitely seems happier and healthier which makes all the hard work worthwhile", Ms Burdekin concluded.

According to the Pet Center, if you are hoping to help your furry friend lose weight you should not make food available to them all the time but rather feed them two to four small meals per day.

Chipped cat finds her way home E-mail
A cat in San Francisco has found its way home after being lost for years, thanks to an identity microchip.

Owners interested in providing the best pet health care or looking for that extra bit of pet cover in case their furry friend goes missing may wish to have their animals chipped - and thanks to such a device, Dicey found her way home.

The cat went missing after the Krooss family adopted a dog that Dicey just did not seem to agree with.

Susan Kerr Krooss admits that while they tried their best to locate Dicey - and still thought about her regularly - they had given up hope.
Ms Krooss told the San Francisco Chronicle: "The days of her disappearance turned into weeks, months, then years. Sometime, I'm not sure when, I gave up hope that Dicey was alive."

But, years later, a woman named Tina turned up on their doorstep to announce that she had found the cat. After taking Dicey to the vet, the microchip led her to the Krooss family home.

Recently the Peninsula Daily News reported the case of a cat that had been missing for five months being reunited with its owner thanks to a similar chip.
