San Francisco Dog Community Gets Political

The dog community in San Francisco has always had a strong political voice but now it seems that they’re gaining some political power. The group DogPac (a party of people that represent dog lovers around the city) are actively backing mayoral candidate John Avalos as it seems he will introduce dog-friendly legislations if he gains the position.

Mr Avalos has vowed to keep the Golden Gate National Recreational Area as a leash-free zone; making a dramatic speech at a rally back in March. This issue has long been hotly contested between DogPac (who are for the area being leash-free) and the current political administration (who are against it). The group of dog lovers have approached the current mayor, Ed Lee, about some of their issues before and whilst he did fill out a DogPac questionnaire, he refused to have an interview or attend a debate held by the group.

Dog Plunges from Cliff

In some amazing news we’ve heard the story of a springer-collie cross that miraculously survived a 120ft plunge off of a cliff, and then waited patiently on the rocks below to be rescued.

Ben the dog must have thought it was his lucky day, chasing a deer on the cliff top on a fresh winter morning. Unfortunately, he couldn’t stop himself in time and fell from the cliff-top. His owner had not seen where he had gone and, assuming Ben had run off, started a localised search to find Ben, quickly putting up posters stating that Ben had gone missing.

Bluefin Tuna Overfishing

A worrying report has come out today as it appears that boats in the Mediterranean are reporting less numbers of Bluefin Tuna than they are actually catching. There were measures put into place by ICCAT, the fishery regulators, but it appears that fishers have been abusing this system, to the extent where 140% more Bluefin meat found its way onto the market than reports would have otherwise suggested.

The Bluefin tuna has been hit hard by fishing to the extent where it is now listed as a threatened species, meaning that unless things change regarding human interaction with the species it is very likely to become endangered in a short space of time. In 2008, the legal limit for imports on the tuna was set at 29,082 tonnes, where an estimated 38,000 tonnes was traded. In 2009, this limit was slashed down to 13,525, but astonishingly the amount that was traded is estimated to have reached 35,000 tonnes.

160 Dogs Rescued from Puppy Mill

160 dogs have been rescued from what is thought to be a puppy mill in Montana (America). The authorities received a tip-off from a couple who had seen the appalling living conditions that the dogs were living in whilst looking at buying a puppy from the owner of the establishment, Mike Chilinski. The animal authorities had also received several complaints from people who had bought what they believed to be ‘show quality’ dogs over the internet, only to find they were very sick.

Upon arrival the animal welfare authorities found that the poor canines were living in pens that there were filled with faeces. The animals had no food or water and many of them were suffering from malnourishment; whilst others had open wounds that were infected. The dogs have been taken into care at the Lewis and Clark Humane Society and await a court’s decision on what their future holds; Mr Chilinski faces several counts of animal cruelty.
