Ethical insurance customers may be disturbed by the news that a woman who stabbed her pet dog in the chest has been given another chance at ownership.

Anne Campbell was in Stirling Sheriff Court in September 2008 after she was found guilty of having struck her black collie Shep with a kitchen knife during an argument, the Sun reported.

The news has been condemned by Advocates for Animals director Ross Minett, who was quoted by the news source as saying: "It can never be acceptable to stab a dog. It is hard to imagine why the sheriff deemed her fit to have custody of animals."

He went on to say he hoped authorities would keep a close eye on the 53-year-old mother.

The court had heard how when police arrived, Campbell was "hysterically hugging the dog".

Sheriff Andrew Cubie justified his decision by asserting the behaviour was "truly a one-off" and she should be given another chance.

Recently in Scotland, a woman was handed a ten-year ban on pet ownership for neglecting her animals.
