There are no bad breeds of dog, only irresponsible owners, the president of the Australian branch of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has asserted. Lynne Bradshaw responded to a recent Victoria event in which a girl was bitten by a pit bull by publishing a newspaper column urging legislators not to ban certain canines. "The recent case occurred because a dog owner allowed a poorly trained and poorly socialised dog to roam freely in a public place," she noted. She relayed the results of studies that discovered those pooches that are most frequently threatened with bans do not inflict any more injuries that any other breed of dog that has been trained for aggression. "The heart of the issue is responsible pet ownership," Ms Bradshaw stated. She went on to say public education of both dogs and owners was what the RSPCA felt to be the best dog-bit prevention strategy. The American branch of the RSPCA recently relayed comments from Dr Stephan Zawistowski noting properly training a pet was a vital investment in its long-term healthcare and wellbeing.
