RSPCA: Dog breeding in the UK must change E-mail
The results of a report on the problems facing certain breeds of dog have led a leading animal welfare charity to call for major changes.

Entitled Pedigree Dog Breeding in the UK: A Major Welfare Concern?, the commissioned study has uncovered institutionalised illness and systematic deformation among certain canines.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has urged widespread action on this issue.

Senior scientist with the charity Claire Calder said: "Pedigree dogs urgently need our help and the way they are bred must change."

The organisation added: "The RSPCA is extremely concerned about the unacceptably high levels of disability, deformity and hereditary disease affecting these animals."

A 2008 BBC documentary entitled Pedigree Dogs Exposed lifted the lid on many of the crippling pet healthcare problems faced by severe in-breeding.

Among disturbing revelations were that a third of Cavalier King Charles spaniels suffer from painful syringomyelia and that epilepsy in boxers is 20 times more commons than it is in humans.

The latter also faces very high incidents of heart disease and cancer - often in the form of brain tumours.
