Rescuers have provided healthcare treatment to two six-week-old puppies which were found abandoned in a box.

The Jack Russell terrier cross-breeds had lost their fur and had overgrown nails when volunteers from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) found them in a field near Maidstone.

Inspector Teresa Potter called attention to their young age, saying this made the abandonment even worse.

"These puppies were found in a poor condition and had simply been left to survive on their own, which they never would have been able to," she added.

A passerby who was walking their own dog found the pair in a box and called the charity.

Recently, an injured Rottweiler puppy was found abandoned near a pile of rubbish in Leeds.

Her back leg was broken and the RSPCA estimated she had been there for three days.

The puppy was three months old and her tail had been docked - something the charity noted was made illegal back in 2006 with the Animal Welfare Act.
