A charity worker has alleged that some people are using the economic downturn as an excuse to get rid of their pets.Annette Marriot of Animals in Need said many of those who parted company with their pets in the past claimed they were doing so because the animal was making them ill. However, she said this reason is now being used less and less, as many are blaming the state of the economy instead. "A few of them are now using the economic climate as an excuse," Ms Marriot commented. Nevertheless, she told the Northampton Chronicle that the majority of those people who are getting rid of their animals are doing so for genuine reasons. Ms Marriot said lots are struggling to afford to look after their animals, amid a climate of high utility bills and food prices. This echoes recent comments from animal welfare volunteer Kirsty O'Sullivan, who told the Barking and Dagenham Recorder that the problem of animals being abandoned is still an issue. She also claimed the credit crunch is being used as an excuse by pet owners who no longer wish to look after their animals.
