Dog sanctuary 'inundated with animals' E-mail
Animal welfare staff in Yorkshire have revealed that they are being inundated with abandoned dogs.

Thornberry Animal Sanctuary in Sheffield said many dogs are coming in during the run-up to the festive season.

Staff believe they have been let go as their owners want to save money during the credit crunch and free up cash for the Christmas period.

Speaking to the Dinnington Guardian, kennel manager Julie Brown said it is apparent that people want to spend their money on other things.

Larger dogs such as Staffordshire bull terriers were said to be particularly likely to be abandoned.

"People buy these dogs because they think they look cool," she commented.

"But then they get them home and realise they take a lot of looking after and they can't cope."

Ms Brown added that most of these animals are left out on the street to fend for themselves.

This comes after the Cats Protection League revealed that cats are also being disregarded by their owners.

Spokesperson Yola Mealing told BBC News that it has had a higher than average number of animals left in its care over the last few months.
