A dog rescue attempt that unfortunately ended with the canine being put to sleep was "extremely upsetting" for the inspector involved.Mike Scargill of the RSPCA explained how last week he found a seven-year-old female Staffordshire bull terrier cross dumped in a field close to death. After taking her to the vet, who said there was nothing else to do other than prevent further suffering, a post mortem showed she had been hit very hard on the left-side of her head with a blunt weapon. An eyeball had popped out, her skull was smashed and, because there were no visible footprints around where she was dumped, it is thought someone just threw her over a hedge to die and drove away. "You get a couple of cases every year that are so disturbing you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about them. This is definitely one of those cases," inspector Scargill said. "Even the police officer who was with me was visibly shocked by what we found." The RSPCA has now launched an investigation into the tragedy. It follows news last month of a professional dog handler that was given a life ban from keeping any animal. Lee Ellerton, 37, of Burslem in Stoke-on-Trent, was also handed a 12-week prison sentence for causing unnecessary suffering to two dogs that he locked in a van on a day when temperatures reached 30 degrees C. Both canines died. Animal Friends Insurance Services are an ethical pet insurance company.
