State authorities across America look set to follow the lead of the UK and much of Europe in banning owners from declawing their pet cats. Just recently, California became the first state to introduce legislation against the practice, which supporters argue can have animal behaviour benefits such as preventing cats from destroying their owners' homes. The topic was recently covered by Texan news service KBTX, which stated that some veterinarians maintain declawing is tantamount to animal cruelty as it can leave pet cats unable to walk pain-free and can also leave them vulnerable when outside of their home. Those opposed to the practice believe it to be "a form of amputation and it renders the cat defenceless if attacked". Speaking to the channel, one animal behaviour expert also advised owners to teach their pet cats how to make use of scratching posts so as to minimise any possible destruction of furniture. Meanwhile, the charity Boxer Welfare has cited the recent ban on tail docking as a factor behind the recent rise of unwanted pet dogs, according to the BBC Animal Friends Insurance Services are an ethical pet insurance company. We have been supporting animal welfare charities around the world since 1999 by donating all net profits to their causes. Written by Elaine
