Is Buying Pet Insurance Really Worth It?

If your pet dog or cat needs veterinary treatment for any one of a number of common diseases or is inflicted by a life threatening illness, the cost of treatment could run into many thousands of pounds. UK Veterinary care is expensive! Pet insurance is there to protect you from such disasters and also provide a lifeline to your pet as you may not necessarily be able to afford the best treatment at the time.

Psychologists are known for inventing unusual research topics to delve into human thought, mind and behaviour. But some of the research topics can get pretty weird. In the recent times, some of the quirkiest study topics have been taken up by the researchers. Here, we take you through some curious research themes dealing with dogs. In fact, there are quite a many studies done about how we tend to interact with dogs. Interestingly, there are not so many (studies) about our interaction with the cats.

Jeremy Dean, with M. Sc. in Research Methods in Psychology at University College, London, and also a Graduate Diploma in Psychology, has been keenly keeping track of the studies done about dogs to check how humans deal with them, and vice versa. He has listed some of his favourite studies looking into the fascinating psychology of dog- human or human-dog interaction, whichever way you look at it.

There’s a study done to analyse the phenomenon of talking to a dog as if people are talking to a little baby. Jeremy asks. “Are they actually talking to their dogs or their babies?” (No surprise, the way we look to secure our child’s future by getting insurance, we now also treat dog insurance as something very essential!) The above mentioned research to compare how humans talk to dogs with how they talk to infants has found some stark similarities and differences as well.

The similarities found were repetitive usage of ‘grammatically acceptable’ words and present-tense verbs in high-pitched voice. The major difference was that dog talk involved brief, concise sentences in more orderly tone whereas baby talk comprised more polite queries in a softer tone. According to the researchers, the main problem in communicating with both dogs and babies was that it involved taking to an inattentive and limited addressee. Now, who’s to be blamed for this, or are we expecting too much?
