Both managed to cheer up nursing home residents almost equally! Researchers at St. Louis University who conducted a study found that both - an affectionate pup named Sparky and a robotic dog AIBO - had almost the same effect on lonely residents of a nursing home. For seven weeks, the residents were divided into three groups. One group got visits from AIBO, which used artificial intelligence.

 

The second group was visited by Sparky, a real, trained therapy dog; the third group did not have any dog visits at all. AIBO and Sparky provided equal comfort to the residents. The research team had expected Sparky, the real dog, to have an edge over a robotic dog, but that wasn’t the case! The conclusion drawn: older people who are lonely and sick would benefit from robot dogs that could offer companionship. They need not be fed or walked, and could be programmed to alert emergency workers for any emergency by keeping an eye on their owners. However, the question is whether they will be loyal. Also, the companionship will be sans emotions. A robot dog cannot be a substitute to a real dog who provides affection and loyalty. Alright, if you get a real dog, then you really should get a dog pet insurance policy, but I know which I'd prefer!
