The English Setter with its luscious coat of silky hair is an elegant and an aristocratic dog, and why not, for the English Setter was bred for elegance and agility. With its powerful chest that smoothes down to the taut lines of its legs and feet, the lean powerful body and muscles make the agile dog a great runner. With a touch of feathering on its already smooth coat, especially in the prominent parts, the ears, tail and legs plus the unique ‘belton’ coat, its tri coloured or sometimes bi-coloured coat gives this swift and lean animal the look of an intelligent aristocrat, placing it a class apart from many other breeds. Since this dog has, over the years, been bred as an elegant and intelligent animal, the Setter was bred to be an independent hunter, achieving its goals with ease. Grouped as a sporting dog, these animals have a normal life span of 10-12 years and despite being large in size, shed moderately. Their height is around 61-69 cm and their weight varies between 25-36 kg in males and 20-32 kg in females. Being large dogs, they need a lot of room to run and exercise and an ideal living space for them would be a large fenced-in outdoor area, a rural setting or maybe an urban setting if the owner is able to exercise them regularly.
English Setters suffer from relatively few health problems compared to many other breeds. However there are some conditions - such as hip dysplasia, skin allergies and dermititis, deafness and thyroidism - which owners should be aware could affect them and they should take out adequate dog insurance to cover the costs of treatment should these conditions arise. |
