The bulldog has got its name for obvious reasons. With its fierce looks, wide and broad body, powerful gait and the short but stout appearance of great strength, the name suits it perfectly. The English Bulldog is no different. The English Bulldog clearly conveys its power and dignity. The English Bulldog’s face is just as distinctive as its name. It has a brachiocephalic face with a short and compressed muzzle that gives it the ‘do not-mess-with-me’ look. Its lower jaw is considerably longer than the upper and its upper lips hang below the lower jaw and are loose to the mouth. Viewed from any angle, its cheeks are noticeable, which makes the English Bulldog look very tough. The eyes are set away from each other and are usually dark in colour. Small, thin ears on a broad and wide skull are completed with wrinkles across the forehead area. The body is heavyset and thick with sloped shoulders. With a well defined chest, the centre of the bulldog’s back is slightly higher than the rest of the body. With a fine, short coat, the bulldog has its distinctive wrinkles on specific parts of the body. The bulldog’s descent through the centuries began with the ancient Mastiffs who were imported fighting dogs from Asia. Over the years they were bred for bull-baiting, and eventually crossed with the Pug to create the docile family dog we know and love today. Despite its tough look, the bulldog craves love and attention, is very loyal and makes a great companion. They love car rides and are incredibly patient. They make great companions for the elderly and are great dogs to have if you have children. The English Bulldog does not have any specific health problems which could be excluded in your pet insurance policy, but does have a tendency to overheat so beware of over-exertion in hot weather. They are also droolers and snorers, so get some tissues and ear-plugs in! |
