Not Just for Christmas
The Dogs Trust has been publicising how dogs and other pets are also being hit by the credit crunch this month. The animal charity has received at one shelter alone eight litters of puppies within a week after the dog owners decided they could no longer afford to keep the pups. The Collie Crosses, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Lurchers and Labrador Crosses have been housed at the Dog's Trust shelter in Darlington. The Supporters Relations Officer, Kate Purvis at Darlington Dog's Trust said: "The economic slump means people can't afford the food and vets bills for their pets anymore. Keeping a dog is a big commitment. We are always available to give people advice on whether they should get a dog and how to care for the dog they have." The current climate is escalating the already dire issue of people buying pets as gifts at Christmas. Purvis went on to say: "Every year we take in puppies that have been bought as Christmas presents and abandoned once the novelty wears off. Dogs need a lot of time, love and devotion and anyone considering getting a dog should think very seriously. Remember that a dog is for life, not just for Christmas." When owning a dog you need to not only supply food and warmth but training, exercise and health care. Buying good pet insurance is vital. So the message is to think seriously about the commitment before you get a pet.
