Dogs in Inverness at risk from deadly parvovirus

A local vet in Inverness has encountered two cases of an unusual deadly parvovirus affecting dogs. Parvovirus enteritis is a serious viral infection of the gastrointestinal tract of young dogs. The virus attacks the cells of the gut resulting in vomiting and profuse diarrhoea. Parvovirus also suppresses the immune system and causes a profound decrease in the white blood cell numbers circulating in the blood.

The disease has been known to kill dogs within 24 hours, and although usually attacks younger dogs can affect any dogs regardless of their age or breed. Alistair Cliff from Crown Vets asked dog owners to make sure their pets were well protected to prevent this highly contagious infection from spreading.

Several other cases of this disease have been heard of in the city. Vaccination for this particular virus is very effective and readily available and must be immediately acquired as it is an animal welfare issue. The disease has been around since 1970 and contributed to the death of many dogs until an effective vaccine was produced. The virus can spread through contact with infected faeces or other infected dogs, and can survive in the environment for a year or more; just because one dog is not affected it does not mean that other dogs in the area are not at risk.

If a dog shows signs of parvovirus it is necessary to take immediate action as the dog could die within 24 hours.
