Cushing's Syndrome

Cushing's Syndrome occurs when a dog is exposed to consistent high levels of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands which are located near the kidneys. The pituitary gland located at the base of the brain produces ACTH which controls the production and release of the cortisol.

Cortisol is normally released into the bloodstream at times of stress to prepare the dog's body for a fight or flight response. In dogs with Cushing's syndrome the cortisol hormone is produced excessively and constantly making the animal ill. This syndrome is usually seen in older dogs.

Some of the symptoms associated with Cushing's Syndrome include skin and hair loss and the animal becomes lethargic. Dogs with this condition usually will drink large amounts of water and urinate frequently. They eat ravenously and might have a "pot belly." Blood tests are preformed to confirm whether your dog has this condition or not.

Treatment requires reducing the level of cortisol in the dog's blood. A dog will have to take medication for life in order to stop the debilitating effects of this syndrome. Vetoryl is the medication used by vets in the UK and has to be taken daily.

Cushing's syndrome is usually found in older dogs but it is also becoming more prevalent in horses. This disease in horses is regarded as incurable; however it is possible that they can live a long relatively happy life with proper treatment.

Symptoms shown in horses that have Cushing's disease include coats that grow very woolly and curly. There may be an increase in sweating in patches and the stomach becomes distended. There may be some weight loss and the horse will drink a lot and urinate frequently.Treatment is difficult at times; there are drugs available for mild cases. Homeopathic treatments can be useful. You should contact your vet to have blood tests to evaluate your horse's condition and they will be able to offer suggestions for treatment.
