Abyssinian Cats

Another one of the oldest cat breed to ever be established, the Abyssinian originally came from Southeast Asia, but its exact history and origins are mostly unknown. We do know that the first Abys was discovered in England in the 1800's when the British were over in Ethiopia fighting. In the 1900's the Abyssinian breed was brought to the United States. This is a very energetic breed that exhibits a lot of dog like values and mannerisms.

Appearance of the Abyssinian
The Abyssinian has a very distinct appearance that is not easily mistaken for other breeds. Some of their distinct characteristics include an exceptionally long neck and a long lean body. They do not appear skinny though, as they are very muscular cats. They are short haired, and have a thin head with large ears that always make it look as though they are on alert. They have faces shaped as a wedge and eyes that are slanted like almonds much like the Siamese.

Although almost all Abys are long haired, there is also a version called the Somali that is long haired as well. This breed as distinct tabby markings on its head, some have stripes on the legs and neck, and each of their hairs has several different coloured highlights to it to give a shiny look to the cat's coat.

There are four main colours of the Abyssinian cat, the ruddy version is most common and the bands on each strand of fur vary in color from bright orange to black, and gives an overall burnt orange appearance. Red have colour bands from dark brown to bright orange, blue Abyssinians have dark blue and beige or tan alternating rings, and fawn colored Abys have light brown to a rosy cream color.

Temperament
In their personalities, the Abyssinians display many dog like mannerisms. They are extremely loyal and will follow you around from place to place. They are very smart and attentive as well, and can easily be taught tricks when they are in the mood to learn. Although they are affectionate, they do not like to be held or confined at all, which does not make them good for those who want a lap cat.Very active, Abyssinians are always running and playing. They keep their playfulness even as they age, and the get along well with children and other animals. This breed needs a lot of exercise, but is more than willing to occupy and play by itself.

Health Issues Common in Abyssinians

An overall hardy breed, they can be prone to gingivitis. You should perform routine dental care on your cat to ensure that its teeth and gums remain in good condition. Some Abyssinians suffer from Renal Amyloidosis as do other breeds of cats, and this can cause kidney failure. It is believed to be genetic, but usually precautions can be taken to prevent it. Purchasing a pet insurance plan for your Abyssinian friend will help to protect you against the costs of treatment for many health problems your cat may experience.

Those searching for an active cat for a companion, that does not feel the need to lay all over them at all times will be quite happy with an Abyssinian. They are loyal for a lifetime to their owners and are great around all ages and animals as well.
