Britain’s overweight cats and dogs could invalidate pet insurance
Recent research in Britain stated that almost half of the pet dogs that vets saw were overweight. The reason behind this is the treats that owners regularly feed their dogs. The consequences of over-feeding your pet can lead to high medical bills for owners not to mention damage to the health of the dogs. Twenty one percent of dogs that were seen by vets were described as slightly overweight and one out of four were considered to be obese.
Weight problems also exist in cats. Research showed that 20 percent were considered a little overweight and 19 percent were considered obese. Sainsbury’s Finance has warned that being overweight can lead to these animals suffering from many medical conditions like respiratory disorders and osteoarthritis.
They also warn that if owners are found to have not taken proper care of their pets they could risk invalidating their pet insurance. Sainsbury’s pet insurance manager stated that medical costs for long term conditions like arthritis can involve a lot of money through the animal’s life time. So it is important for owners to be insured by policies that have adequate levels of pet cover. However owners can invalidate their insurance if precaution is not taken against their pets being overweight.
