Bedbugs will irritate pet dogs and cats

Tuesday, 31 August 2010 13:07

Just as bedbugs can strike the homes of ethical insurance customers, they can invade bedding and toys belonging to a pet dog or cat.

However, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), there are ways of exterminating the tiny mites.

The minute creatures feed on warm-blooded beings such as humans, moggies and canines, although smaller animals may be more likely to be affected.

Dr. Tina Wismer, the ASPCA's senior director of veterinary outreach and education, reminded owners that there is no need to physically treat furry friends for the pests, as they do not live on the actual body.

When using chemical substances to eradicate bedbugs from the home, however, it is important to check the products with a veterinarian first to ensure they are not harmful to your four-legged friends, she continued on to say.

As for other insects and creepy-crawlies, especially in warmer weather, it could be worth investing in specialised repellent for pets.

Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
